Arguably, the most heartwarming moment of the 2001 concert film The Original Kings of Comedy arrives when comedian Steve Harvey, expounding on the joys of '70s R&B in a hip hop world, signals the concert sound man, who begins to play snippets of old-school love songs.
When the Lenny Williams' classic "Cause I Love You" comes up - particularly the part where Lenny, in an anguished, drama-filled soliloquy, declares his undying love for his woman - the audience goes absolutely crazy, and Harvey's point, that old school soul is the music you turn to when you want the real deal, is valiantly made.
But then, for more than two decades, singer/songwriter Lenny Williams has diligently - distinctively - made that point. As disposable pop music trends and the one-hit-wonders they manifest come and go, Williams, first as lead singer of the legendary band Tower of Power and then as a solo artist, has done his own thing with dedication, consistence and a whole lotta heart.
